Dig Into The History Of What's Underneath The Dean Galway
The modern façade of The Dean Galway gives little away to what lies behind its doors. Built on the site of the historic Galway-Clifden railway line, the hotel incorporates the beautiful brick and stone vaulted railway tunnel structure, now home to POWER Gym. These tunnels have been restored and protected, and are a relic to Galway’s past and part of our future here at The Dean. Pop down to the lower ground floor or take part in a POWER class to view and enjoy these unique spaces.
A Little About the History
Back in the early 20th century, this stretch of rail was important. Built to connect Galway with the remote west coast town of Clifden, it carried travellers through the Maam Valley and alongside the Twelve Bens, bringing everything from daily goods to excursions for fishing and shooting. Along the way, there were shebeens and stops where life and laughter spilled out after a hard day’s work.
The Route
The line set out from Galway and pushed deep into the wild country west of the city, winding its way toward Clifden about 48 miles away. Along the route were many bridges, stations and stretches of land that felt untouched by time. For local kids, the Bohermore tunnel underneath Prospect Hill- now part of our hotel’s foundation- was once a favourite spot to watch and listen for the whistle of an approaching train.
For many, a journey on this line was more than a trip. It was the first step on a much longer journey, particularly for those boarding trains bound for ports and emigration, never to return home.
Closure
Despite the beauty of its route, the railway struggled to stay afloat. Harsh weather, challenging terrain and not enough freight or passengers made it hard to keep running. After decades of service, the last train rolled in 1935 and the line closed.
The Railway Line Today
Today, remnants of the old line live on in walking and cycling trails, inviting a slower kind of journey through Connemara’s landscapes. Old stations and structures around Clifden and beyond offer a glimpse into a time when rail was lifeblood for rural life.
Here at The Dean Galway, parts of the original railway- including the brick and stone vaulted tunnels- have been restored and woven into the hotel’s design, blending past and present in unexpected ways. Talk about a unique setting for your next workout.
