Thermal suites. Olympic-grade equipment. Classes that challenge your mind and your body. Instructors who actually know your name. Power is the hotel wellness and fitness spot that makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about working out.
We caught up with Power Ops Manager Peter Tully to chat about what makes Power so unique in the fitness space in Ireland, and what keeps members coming back for more.
Let's start with the obvious question: what separates Power from other hotel gyms?
There are lots of factors, but to really get to the heart of it, Power is a full lifestyle approach to fitness. It’s the instructors, the equipment, the classes, the thermal spaces, the design and how that makes you feel, and the fact we’re genuinely performance-led.
The Power approach is built around four pillars: body composition analysis, strength, cardio and recovery. The Body Tracks, which are body composition analysers, measure your muscle and fat percentage, so you can actually track progress beyond just the number on the scales. Then there's the recovery side of things, Hypervolt massage guns, foam rollers, saunas, and the outdoor hydrotherapy pools with heated jets. There’s also the social element too. It's the full picture of fitness, which makes workouts as fun, challenging and effective as they can possibly be.
In terms of equipment, we've got Technogym Skillrun treadmills, Eleiko barbells (the same ones used by Olympic weightlifters) and Concept 2 Ski Ergs and Rowers. It’s best-in-class kit, which we’ve invested in because better equipment allows you to perform better. That philosophy runs through everything we do.
The studio classes are different, to say the least. Walk us through what's happening in those rooms.
All classes are 45 minutes and instructor-led, but they vary by location. The most unique is VersaClimber, which we run in Cork and at our Mayson location in Dublin. We're the only facility in the country doing it. It's low-impact but don’t let that fool you, it’s full body conditioning that burns more calories than any other cardio machine. Cork's version is kind of like a spin class, where you're climbing in time to banging tunes with lighting and choreography that matches the intensity. At Mayson, it's a more instructor-led strength and conditioning-style class.
Then there's Power Pedal, which is our spin class with this brilliant energy to it. Think a mix of karaoke, feel-good vibes, brilliant playlists, rhythm rides that push your dopamine and endorphins through the roof. We do themed classes, pop classics, the works. At our Galway and The Dean Dublin locations, there’s also Box, which is a mixture of combos on the bag with strength and cardio, as well as Run, which is strength and conditioning work on the treadmill. All locations have Hyrox-affiliated training and MetCon, which is a more traditional strength and conditioning format that takes place on the gym floor.
Tell me about the instructors. From what I’ve heard, they’re super involved and engaged, not just there to shout encouragement from the top of the room.
Absolutely. Our instructors are some of the best in the country at what they do. They’re all naturally outgoing, with high energy that’s matched by their deep knowledge, and they all bring their unique personalities into the studios. They're phenomenal at coaching and correcting form, which is hugely important as it impacts the outcome of your training so much.
I’ve mentioned this, but a hugely important aspect of being a member at Power is the personal service. We know all of our members well, and you're coached by name. It's more like small group training than a general class experience where you’re just a number. When you’re on the bike or treadmill pushing through, it’s amazing how much of a difference someone encouraging you by name makes.
What would your biggest fans say keeps them coming back?
Most people fall into two distinct categories, the class-goers and the private members. The classes are more communal experiences, so that crowd comes for the instructor relationships, the social connection, the events. The members might dip into events occasionally, but they're most often here to hit the gym floor and use the sauna and thermal suite.
It’s kind of personal preference, but we have such loyal clients, and what I hear time and time again is how much people love the full experience, how you can come in and hit the gym and then relax afterwards, and also how challenging and fun the classes are. Genuinely the instructors always get shoutouts, that personal experience really does make the biggest difference!
Do you do any fitness events or wellness experiences?
In terms of events, in the past we’ve collaborated with brands like Alo Yoga and Lululemon for bespoke classes. We do member-only community events like Run Club or Power Hour in Galway, where new members can try a superset of Box, Run, and MetCon classes. We’re always evolving and thinking of the next events, they’re always great fun and it’s a brilliant way to experience our spaces in unexpected and unique ways.
Sounds amazing. So if I want to get involved, how do I become a member or join a class?
To become a member, drop us a line through the form on the website and we’ll set up a session for you to come in. Once you’re set up, you’ll be able to book everything through the Power app and start enjoying the gym floor, classes and thermal suite.
You can also come to a class without becoming a member. Download the Power app and set up your account, and you can then buy class credits to come on in and get involved.
And of course if you’re staying at The Dean Dublin, Cork or Galway or The Mayson, hotel guests can use the gym and thermal suite. Classes can also be booked at a special guest rate, and you book them directly at Reception.
I’m in. Final question. If you could say just one thing about Power, what would it be?
If you're serious about your fitness and wellness goals and want to have a good time achieving them, Power is the place for you.
